Painting Niina Räty

A living room is for living, a lounge is for lounging and a waiting room is for waiting. Each space used according to their intended purpose.

A work room is for working. You take a canvas and hoist it upright, pound the upper corners to the wall with tiny nails, just to make sure it doesn't tip over. There's tubes of paint, brushes, solvent, and a spark of an idea in your head. You just make the first stroke. You spread the pigment on the canvas, not totally focused yet. You keep on painting. Little by little the paint spreads over into the space, stains your fingertips and the clothes and teacups you touch. It sticks to the soles of your shoes, forms a path plotting the way you pace in front of the canvas while working and seeking the optimal viewing distance.

An exhibition space is for looking, wandering around, taking a second look. Getting lost in your thoughts.

What is the relationship between these spaces, their relation to us? Why is our life staged in spaces designated for certain uses? That's nuts, who gave them that power?
