Die Transformation

Die Ausstellung zeigt ein breites Spektrum meiner neueren Arbeiten; Zeichnungen und Drucke sowie Mischungen aus diesen Techniken.

Meine Arbeiten greifen verschiedene Stile und Traditionen auf. Ich entwickle in ihnen eine eigene Erzählung von meinem persönlichen Standpunkt aus; sie zeigen meine Sicht auf die Welt, auf Dinge und Menschen. Figurative Elemente in meinen Bildern bestehen aus Kombinationen verschiedener Stile. Sie erzeugen einen Raum innerer und äußerer Transformation. Durch solche Transformationen lernen Menschen sich selbst von einer neuen Seite kennen und integrieren diese neuen Ideen und Erkenntnisse in ihr Leben. In der inneren Transformation vereinen sich Aufmerksamkeit und unterschwellige Machtkämpfe, die ich zu verstehen und in meinen Arbeiten darzustellen versuche, indem ich dem stillen Wissen zuhöre. Die Arbeiten sind als ein Zeichen für jenen Punkt aufzufassen, an dem meine persönliche Erfahrung der sozialen Wirklichkeit mit der allgemeinen, überindividuellen zusammenfällt und auseinanderläuft.

Außer mit der Darstellung von Transformation in Metaphern beschäftige ich mich mit kulturellen Codes von Identität, Sexualität, Dekonstruktion und Hoffnung.

Einige der gezeigten Werke sind ihrer Natur nach mehrteilig. Diese Vielteiler bestehen aus kleinen Fragmenten, die verschiedene Weltsichten zeigen, in denen der Mensch und die Gesellschaft zusammen eine mosaikartige temporale Karte bilden, in der jedes Einzelelement von Bedeutung ist. Diese Karte verbindet Augenblicke des alltäglichen Lebens von Menschen und baut sie neu zusammen, sie greift Wissenspartikel und Gefühle auf, die sich im Leben ansammeln.

Transformation

The exhibition is a broad presentation of my recent drawings and prints, as well as combinations of these media.

My artworks combine styles and traditions, creating a narration from my point of view and the way I handle world phenomena and humanity. Figures in my artworks consist of combinations of styles representing a space of internal and external transformation. And thru this transformation man learns to know himself in a new way, and starts to adapt these new ideas and information to his or her life. Transformation within combines awareness and subliminal power struggle, which I will try to understand and represent with my artworks, listening to silent information. It is a sign on the state in which the personal and the general social reality converge and diverge in my artworks.

In addition to representing transformation using metaphors, I try to ponder upon, cultural identity code, sexuality, deconstruction and hope in my artworks.

Some of the exhibited artworks are multipart by nature. These multiparties consists of small fragments showing different worldviews, in which man and society together forms a temporal and a mosaic map where every part counts. This map connects and rebuilds together moments of people’s everyday lives and picks up bits and pieces of knowledge and emotions accumulating in life.

Three very different artists, Robin Lindqvist, Veronika Ringbom and Henry Wuorila-Stenberg show paintings, prints and drawings. Artist and curator Jan Kenneth Weckman ties the works together by suggesting, if these works can be investigated in the light of beauty? The distance between the proposal and works might also be transformed in to a question about the being of beauty.
Is it a question about the beautiful, the way all kinds of things may be displayed, or are we able to talk about beauty as a thought, a goal or as an ethos (in art as well)?

The exhibition does not give answers, only builds a space for inquiry, in which we take up a position, each one on our own, like the light, that floods on the work. What do we see, if we ask about beauty in art and in life?

  • Happy Ends ist eine geplante Videoarbeit der finnisch-deutschen Künstler Mika Karhu und Johan Eichhorn, in der kurze Passagen aus bekannten, glücklichen Filmenden durch Schauspieler vorgetragen/gelesen werden. Als Schauspieler treten in Happy Ends Berliner Obdachlose auf, die diese Texte nicht geschönt schauspielern, sondern die Passagen lesen, als ob sie Zeitungen (wie die motz oder den Straßenfeger) in U-Bahnen oder anderswo verkaufen würden.

  • Das Videostudio der Galerie TOOLBOX präsentiert vom 1.6. 2013 bis zum 22.6. 2013 zeitgenössische Videokunst. Das Werk ”Vulpicides” (2013) der Künstlerinnen Jane Hughes und Taru Kallio handelt von der Konfrontation der Menschen mit der Natur. Der Animationsfilm konzentriert sich vor allem auf den Einfluss, den der Mensch auf den ökologischen Wandel hat. Daneben wird der Film ”One Man and Cross-Country Skiing” von Teemu Keisteri gezeigt. In diesem Film läuft ein nackter Mann Ski-Langlauf im finnischen Winter.
  • Galerie Toolbox’s Videostudio presents 1.6.-22.6.2013 contemporary video art. “Vulpicides” from 2013 by artists Jane Hughes and Taru Kallio handles the confrontation between nature and the humankind. The animation concentrates on the impact we as humans have on our environment. Also a film ”One Man and Cross-Country Skiing” by Teemu Keisteri will be presented. In this piece a naked man skis in the Finnish winter.

Hard Facts – a Closer Look

Jan Kenneth Weckman, ein finnischer Maler, Zeichner und Graphiker, stellt seine Zeichnungen in der Galerie Toolbox, Novalisstraße 7, aus. Die Ausstellungseröffnung findet am Freitag, 22. März um 18 Uhr statt.

Galerie Toolbox lädt Sie zu der Eröffnung herzlich ein! Der Künstler wird anwesend sein, zusammen mit Harri Sjöström, einem namenhaften finnischen Sopransaxophonisten, der seit 1985 in Berlin lebt. Sjöström wird sein Werk Imaginäre Klangbilder aufführen, das mit dem visuellen Werk von Jan Kenneth Weckman interagiert. Diesen spannenden, anregenden und einmaligen Abend sollten Sie keinesfalls verpassen!

Hard Facts, a Closer Look (Harte Fakten, ein genauerer Blick) präsentiert drei laufende Serien von Zeichnungen. Zwei davon stellen Radierungen von ursprünglich analog geschaffenen, heute digital zu Pigmentdrucken verarbeiteten Zeichnungen dar. In der Serie, die den Titel der Ausstellung trägt, regt eine Science-Fiction-Erzählsequenz zu einem Blickwechsel an: im Fokus steht der Wandel der Metaphern von Bewusstsein und Erinnerung.

Die Werke von Weckman (geb. 1946) erstrecken sich über einen Zeitraum von 1969 bis heute und wurden neben Finnland auch in Österreich, Kroatien, Tschechische Republik, Dänemark, Estland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Italien, Japan, Norwegen, Schweden und den USA ausgestellt. In Deutschland hat Weckman bisher in Erlangen (1982), Aachen und Bonn (1982) sowie im Atelierhaus Mengerzeile, Berlin (1998) und im Finnland-Institut in Deutschland, Berlin (2001) ausgestellt. Seit 1979 ist eins seiner Werke ein Teil der Kollektion des Staatlichen Museums für Kunst und Design in Nürnberg (Neues Museum).

Jan Kenneth Weckman arbeitet in Turku, Finnland und hatte einen beachtlichen Werdegang als Kunstdozent an der ehemaligen Universität für Kunst und Design in Helsinki – heute ein Teil der Aalto-Universität. 2005 hat er an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Helsinki, über Semiotik und den künstlerischen Arbeitprozess promoviert. Seit einigen Jahren widmet sich Weckman seiner Kunst. Sein theoretisches Interesse prägt den Inhalt und die Form seiner Werke und zeigt sich auch in dem Text, der für die Ausstellung Hard Facts, a Closer Look entstanden ist.

Jan Kenneth Weckman, a Finnish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker (b. 1946), will be displaying a collection of his drawings at Galerie Toolbox, Novalisstrasse 7, Berlin (Mitte), opening on Friday March 22nd, 18 PM.

Galerie Toolbox warmly welcomes you to the opening where the artist will be present along with Harri Sjöström, a renowned soprano saxophonist and a Berlin resident since 1985. Mr. Sjöström will perform his “Imaginary Sound-Pictures” interacting with the visual work of Mr. Weckman. This will be an exciting, vitalizing, once-in-a-lifetime experience you should not miss!

Hard Facts, a Closer Look, presents three ongoing series of drawings, two of which arrive from the erasing work of drawing, originally produced analogically, now digitally, in the format of pigment prints. In the series carrying the title of the exhibition, a narrative of science fiction fuels the changing view giving in to metaphors of consciousness and memory in transformation.

The works of Mr. Weckman cover a stretch from 1969 onwards. He has shown his works and participated in exhibitions in Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the United States. In Germany, Mr. Weckman has exhibited works in Erlangen in 1982, Aachen and Bonn in 1988, in the Berlin Mengerzeile Artist Residence in 1998 and at the Berlin Finnland-institut in 2001. Mr. Weckman’s works have also been represented, since 1979, in the collection of Nürnberg City Museum (Neues Museum).

Jan Kenneth Weckman works in Turku, Finland. He had an extensive career as an art teacher at the former University of Art and Design in Helsinki, which is now a part of Aalto University. Mr. Weckman graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2005 with a doctoral thesis on semiotics and the artistic work process. He has, in recent years, focused on his artistic work. His theoretical interests charge the artwork both in theme and form and influence the text written for the Hard Facts, a Closer Look show.

Social Isolation

Social Isolation, the second exhibition of the new Berlin based art gallery Galerie TOOLBOX, consists of drawings by ten young artists discussing themes of social alienation from a variety of perspectives. The exhibition is based on a concentrated drawing workshop occurring in the gallery, during which every artist implements one work and participates in the creation of one collective work.

The exhibition approaches the social aspects of modern culture from the concept of alienation. What does alienation mean in modern Europe? How can it be treated with the means of art?

The idea of social alienation originates from the philosophy of Georg Hegel (1770–1831). The term of alienation has been especially connected with the theory of Karl Marx. It is one of the most used theories in social sciences and also in modern art.

Alienation deals with the vanishing of human and natural values in a fragmented and objectified social reality. The working culture, with its emphasis on competitiveness, also escalates social relations. The meaning of human dignity and labour is blurred, when man is above all required to conform to be a part of machinery. The satisfaction of understanding totalities, like finishing a work from beginning to end, is a natural human desire. The structural violence of the society, such as fragmentation that creates weakness or connecting human dignity to the ideal of productivity alienates man from nature, other people, his or her own feelings and needs. We require a human dignity that is independent of economy, production and consumption, a freedom to a more comprehensive life in order to be able to recognize man and nature in connection to us, belonging to our own humanity.

Social Isolation brings artists used to independent and lonely work, to work in a commonly shared space. The exhibition and workshop enable the sharing of art and work, and the joy of producing a work from beginning to end.

Galerie TOOLBOX is a cooperative of seven Finnish artists in the centre of Berlin, in Mitte. The gallery represents Finnish and international art from the perspective of social questions.

Social Isolation

Uuden berliiniläisen Galerie TOOLBOXin toinen näyttely Social Isolation koostuu 10 nuoren taiteilijan teoksista, jotka käsittelevät sosiaalisen eristäytymisen teemoja eri näkökulmista. Näyttelyn pohjana on gallerian tiloissa järjestettävä piirustusworkshop, jonka aikana kukin taiteilijoista toteuttaa yhden teoksen ja osallistuu yhden yhteisteoksen tekemiseen.  

Näyttely lähestyy nykykulttuurin sosiaalisia näkökulmia vieraantumisen käsitteestä käsin. Mitä vieraantuneisuus tarkoittaa nyky-Euroopassa? Miten sitä voi käsitellä taiteen keinoin?

Alkujaan ajatus yhteiskunnallisesta vieraantumisesta tulee saksalaisen Georg  Hegelin (1770 – 1831) filosofiasta. Vieraantuneisuuden termi on myöhemmin liitetty etenkin Karl Marxin teoriaan. Se on yksi käytetyimmistä teorioista yhteiskuntapolitiikassa ja myös nykytaiteessa.

Vieraantuneisuudessa on kysymys inhimillisten ja luonnollisten arvojen katoamisesta sirpaloituneessa ja esineellistetyssä yhteiskunnallisessa toiminnassa. Kilpailukykyä korostava työkulttuuri laajenee koskemaan myös sosiaalisia suhteita. Niin ihmisarvon kuin työnkin merkitys hämärtyy, kun ihmiseltä vaaditaan ennen kaikkea sopimista koneiston osaksi. Kokonaisuuksien ymmärtämisen, niin kuin työn alusta loppuun saattamisen nautinto on ihmiselle luonnollinen, inhimillinen tarve. Yhteiskunnan rakenteellinen väkivaltaisuus, kuten voimattomuutta aiheuttava sirpaleisuus tai ihmisarvon sitominen tuottavuuden ideaaliin vieraannuttaa ihmistä luonnosta, toisista ihmisistä, omista tunteistaan ja tarpeistaan. Tarvitsemme taloudesta, tuotannosta ja kuluttamisesta vapaata ihmisarvoa, vapautta kokonaisvaltaisempaan elämään, jotta voisimme tunnistaa ihmisen ja ympäristön luonnollisesti meihin liittyviksi, omaan ihmisyyteemme kuuluviksi.

Social Isolation tuo itsenäiseen ja yksinäiseen työhön tottuneet taiteilijat työskentelemään yhteisesti jaettuun tilaan. Näyttely ja workshop mahdollistaa taiteen ja työn jakamisen, sekä alusta loppuun asti valmistuvan työn tekemisen ilon.

Näyttelyn taiteilijat ovat Maiju Heikkilä (Fin), Anna Tahkola (Fin), Elisabeth Buset (Can), Janne Kärkkäinen (Fin), Sampsa Indgrén (Fin), Jonna Sivonen (Fin), Anne Rossi (Fin), Erkki Nampajärvi (Fin), Matti Vainio (Fin) ja Annika Bergvik-Forsander (Fin). Workshopin ja näyttelyn tutorina toimii kuvataiteilija Mika Karhu. Lisäksi workshopissa luennoi filosofi FT Pentti Määttänen.

Galerie TOOLBOX on seitsemän suomalaisen kuvataiteilijan ylläpitämä galleria Berliinin keskustassa, Mittessä. Galleria esittelee suomalaista ja kansainvälistä taidetta yhteiskunnallisten ja sosiaalisten kysymysten tiimoilta.
