Konfliktstoff has been investigating the interaction of conflict and war for many years, as well as the possibilities of an artistic approach to this difficult topic.
The picture “Woman in the Park (of Lugansk)”, the depiction of a woman killed by an artillery attack in the Ukrainian city of Lugansk, was already created in 2014. This city is the capital of the so called “Lugansk People’s Republic” recognized only by Russia. Its supposed protection is one of the official reasons for Russia’s open entry into the warlike conflict since February 2022.
The use of the term “special operation” instead of the word “war” in Russian propaganda shows the sensitivity of language, which itself is used as a weapon of war in the battle of propaganda.
Language and images are the means of confrontation between the parties to the conflict on a global scale, alongside the actual fighting, the deaths of soldiers and civilians, and the destruction of a country.
The exhibition “Special Operation” shows a selection of textile images that deal with this sort of conflict.

Konfliktstoff untersucht seit vielen Jahren die Wechselwirkung von Konflikt und Krieg
sowie die Möglichkeiten einer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit diesem schwierigen
Thema.
Bereits 2014 entstand das Bild „Frau im Park (von Lugansk)“, die Darstellung einer durch
einen Artillerieangriff getöteten Frau in der ukrainischen Stadt Lugansk. Diese Stadt ist die
Hauptstadt der nur durch Rußland anerkannten „Volksrepublik Lugansk“. Ihr vermeintlicher
Schutz ist einer der offiziellen Gründe für den offenen Eintritt Rußlands in den kriegerischen
Konflikt seit Februar 2022.
Das Verwenden des Begriffs „Spezialoperation“ anstelle des Wortes „Krieg“ in der
russischen Propaganda zeigt die Empfindlichkeit von Sprache, die selbst als Kriegswaffe in
der Propagandaschlacht zum Einsatz kommt.
Sprache und Bild sind neben den eigentlichen Kampfhandlungen, dem Sterben von
Soldaten und Zivilisten und der Zerstörung eines Landes die Mittel der Auseinandersetzung
der Konfliktparteien auf globaler Ebene.
Die Ausstellung „Spezialoperation“ zeigt eine Auswahl textiler Bilder, die sich mit diesem
Konfliktstoff auseinandersetzen.

“Diana”. Ich weiß nicht, ob es das Licht war, das ihr seltsam in die Augen fiel. Aber ich erinnere mich, wie berührt ich war, als ich in ihr blau-meliertes Rund, ihre Iris, sah. Und der Blick wurde weiter in die dunkle Pupille gezogen. Das monumentale Gemälde entstand in einer performativen Situation 2022.
Von Kindheitserinnerungen inspirierte Aquarellbilder in einer Mixed-Media-Installation.
Von der Bildwelt in den physischen Raum – ein Kunstwerk, das man umrunden und lesen kann wie eine 3-dimensionale Collage und dabei totalen Szenenwechsel erlebt. Ein wenig, als ob man sich erst streitet und dann Freunde wird.
Die Mixed-Media-Arbeiten auf Papier beschäftigen sich mit der Frage: Was ist ein gutes Leben in einer Atmosphäre von Unsicherheit oder gar Angst? Ist es möglich, die schlimmen Vorfälle auszublenden, die in unsere hoffnungsvollen Gedanken, in unser
glückliches Zuhause eindringen? Ist es Eskapismus?
Danke, ich komme nun mit der Dunkelheit zurecht. Tatsächlich kann sie wahnsinnig schön sein. Es kommt auf das Licht an, das man setzt, um sie zu erkennen.

In collaboration with Anna E. Wilkens the artist Andreas Wolf has created a walk-in non-representational image at the Finnish-German Art Space Toolbox. During the exhibition, the artist s probably will continue working on the space-image structure.

The German-Jewish photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt succeeded in revealing a portrait of the notorious National Socialist in Geneva in 1933 during a visit by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels to the League of Nations in Geneva. Goebbels fixed the photographer full of hatred and thereby lost his bourgeois mask for a moment.
Through the strong abstraction of the original photo and the reduction to his face, Goebbels hateful gaze is further accentuated in the textile image. The reduction to a few sharp-edged shapes and the contrast of black and white sharpen the image‘s message. Hand-embroidered surfaces create an additional profile depth on the superimposed textile applications.

I was born in 1963 in Joensuu, Finland, where I live and work to this day.
I studied arts for three years (1985- 1988) at Kankaanpää art school. I am a member of Finnish painters association, and also a member of Joensuu art association.
My works are in Finland state collection, city of Joensuu collection and health care district of Joensuu area. Also, they can be found in many private collections.
Art exhibition activities: 28 solo exhibitions, 54 group exhibitions and 12 Finland state art group exhibitions.
During my artistic career I have used many kind of painting methods. I’ve painted with oil colors, water soluable aquarelles, acrylic paints, and also drawings liquid inks in many colors.
Nowadays I am using acrylic paint on canvas and drawing black ink pens on paper.
I paint figurative works. Often on my canvases you can see only one or few body details: one leg, legs, head, or many heads and so on… I use also hints of other living creatures, like animals, or pieces of built environment by humans.
Maybe I want to describe tensions between individuals, temporal nature of life and also how fragile it is in many ways. Maybe there are also thoughts about hatred, love, and absolute evil which surround us sometimes.

I am Harri Turunen, a sculptor from North Karelia.
Herbarium is a collection of plant samples.
The samples may be whole plants or parts thereof and they may be stored dried and pressed.
The material of the flora is painted iron wire. The significance of nature and human diversity is present (in the work). On a larger scale, the lack of intra-species diversity is a threat.

PEOPLE – Notes from the Draughtman’s Diary is three-year project based on the idea of our world view, which consists of stories constructed by all our senses. We fill in and modify these stories throughout our lives.
During the working process, between May 1, 2016 and April 31, 2019, I studied how visual information constructs one’s vision of the world. Daily randomly-chosen Press photos from the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper have been transformed in the draughtman’s diary into a new picture—a vision of the artist’s mindscape, a story of the moment.
The project provides a new way of reinterpreting the Press photos, which tell a new story of the world through free associations—a story I have transferred by drawing into the surroundings of my own experience. The pictures have become part of my own life story.
For those interested in the materials used: Diary pages (30 x 40 cm); a ballpoint pen; oil pastel; and watercolors, white/mainly black.

Menschen – Notizien aus dem Tagebuch des Zeichners ist ein dreijähriges Projekt, das auf der Idee unserer Weltanschauung basiert, die aus Geschichten besteht, die mit allen unseren Sinnen konstruiert werden. Wir füllen und modifizieren diese Geschichten unser ganzes Leben lang.
Während des Arbeitsprozesses, zwischen dem 1. Mai 2016 und dem 31. April 2019, habe ich erforscht, wie visuelle Informationen die eigene Sicht der Welt konstruieren. Täglich zufällig ausgewählte Pressefotos der Helsinkier Zeitung (Helsingin Sanomat) wurden im Tagebuch des Zeichners in ein neues Bild verwandelt – eine Vision der Geisteslandschaft des Künstlers, eine Geschichte des Augenblicks.
Das Projekt vermittelt eine neue Art der Interpretation der Pressefotos, die durch freie Assoziationen eine neue Weltgeschichte erzählen – eine Geschichte, die ich durch Zeichnen in die Umgebung meiner eigenen Erfahrung übertragen habe. Die Bilder sind Teil meiner eigenen Lebensgeschichte geworden.
Für Interessierte, die verwendeten Materialien sind: Tagebuchseiten (30 x 40 cm); ein Kugelschreiber; Öl-Pastell; und Aquarelle, weiß/hauptsächlich schwarz.
